Mojada

(Assistant Sound Designer)

Medea and Jason have escaped the worst. After a harrowing journey across the Mexican–American border, the couple has made it safely to the States, where they can work toward a better life for their family. While Jason is convinced the future looks bright, Medea fears a darker fate as they face the challenges of living without documentation. Blending Euripides’ classic with Mexican folklore, Luis Alfaro examines the tragedy behind America’s immigration system and the destiny of one family caught in its grip. Mojada is a modern telling of the ancient story of Medea.

Responsibilities

As the assistant sound designer, I was around for all of the pre-tech, tech, and dress processes. My designer, Noel, composed music for transitions and scenes. Part of my responsibilities included pulling multiple sound effects for them to use. I gave some of my personal sound effects that I recorded and edited from around Los Angeles since the play is based in Boyle Heights. I helped my designer record some sound effects as their recording engineer. I also recorded myself saying the preshow announcement in English and Spanish. Since we were not on ground, my designer and I attended tech and dress through Zoom to communicate, a youtube live stream to see the stage, and using team viewer to adjust Q Lab. As the assistant, I took notes of things that needed to be adjusted and was in the room when they were away on another show.
