When Yuri Met Malcom
(Audio Engineer)
Told through the prism of her unlikely friendship with Malcolm X, When Yuri Met Malcolm explores the legacy of Yuri Kochiyama. We follow Yuri’s life from her “red, white, and blue” days in the Japanese American internment camps, to her rapid radicalization during the civil rights movement, to all her activism that followed through the decades. What does it mean to be a citizen of our flawed, flawed country? And how much can a single person do to change it?

Engineering Experience
When Yuri Met Malcom was such a powerful show to mix. The first time I had seen the show and also learned about Yuri Kochiyama was my first day on the job. I wanted to cry with how powerful the story was. Theatre for Youth at East West Players gave me the chance to help tell this story to children, teenagers, and adults. This show was also incredible because it toured. I was set up in so many different places under so many different conditions. I was inside, outside, small venues, big venues, and the list goes on. The call involved setting up, running the show, and striking. The setup was a road case filled with the equipment I took to all locations and 2 QSC speakers. We used 2 wireless sure mics and set them through a Mackie mixer. Since the show was in different places and was also double cast with the cast interchanging, I was constantly adjusting the EQ and board setup to fit the actors and show needs. Take a look at some pictures I took at different locations below!
