Otto the Robot

A semester-long project where a group of students from the School of Dramatic Arts and Iovine and Young Academy teamed together to create a campus pet. Spanning 8 weeks, meeting once a week for 3 hours, our team collaborated together to create something we each have never seen or heard before. Otto, a delivery robot, was redecorated to show school spirit and to help deliver goodies and happiness to any student we ran into. Read below to see my process on how I created sound for this lovely fella.

Version 1

  • Before we received otto I had only seen pictures of this robot and wanted to channel some incoherent sounds such as those from animal crossing, the minions, and the sims. Pictured above is a sketch I did of how I originally wanted him to look/be.

  • I recorded myself making some silly sounds. I then added this to ProTools where I pitch-shifted my voice in different ways until I found one I liked. I then came back to the team to show them what I had created.

Versions 2-4

  • After receiving otto, we saw just how huge and robotic he was and decided to steer away from the super high-pitched sound. I was given a note to create 3 different versions of the sounds to see what we could do.

  • I went back to ProTools and recorded my friend making some sounds. I then manipulated the same sound effect with pitch shift once again so that when presented, my team would be able to hear the difference in terms of range.

Final Version

  • After multiple attempts, I came back to the drawing board and teamed up with the person who created the moving face in order to align my sound with the facial gestures of Otto.

  • Using a mix of electronic sounds and pitch shifting a human voice, I created this perfect blend that can be looped.
